My makeup brush holder just wasn’t doing it for me anymore. It was completely functional but silvery gravel in a clear rectangular vase just wasn’t decorative enough for my liking. I looked on Pinterest but couldn’t find anything that really jumped out to me so I finally came up with this DIY on my own π
This is the finished product! The total cost? $4! Definitely worth it for two cute, new makeup brush holders π
The containers themselves are actually candle holders that I found at Dollar Tree! I think they were a special for Mother’s Day but they may still have some. If not, they have many more small tins that would work well for this project. Mine were originally purple, but they had several colors when I went.
I went with a cheap paint in “light buttercream.” I wanted something close to white, but not quite white so a cream was the perfect fit for me. They turned out a little more yellow than I had originally wanted but I think once I’m out of the dorm bathrooms they’ll look a LOT better! I used a sponge brush to apply the paint.
I believe this picture was taken after the first or second coat. In all, I did 3 coats on the outside followed by 3 slightly lighter coats on the inside (since you won’t be seeing the inside much anyway.) Once the paint is completely dry, you’ll want to apply some sort of glossy sealant. I used Mod Podge Hi-Shine spray which is my personal favorite, but any type of sealant will work! Or you can just leave them painted as is if you like the look/texture.
Now, for the labels. I actually bought a special punch (more like stole one of my mom’s but she ended up letting me have it π ) and I had some chalkboard vinyl from other projects so those were free to make. If you’re into chalkboard labels like me, I would definitely recommend investing in a punch and some vinyl… it has such a nice texture and you’ll save TONS over the course of several projects, especially if one of those projects is organizing all your craft supplies in tubs with chalkboard labels (mine was.)
I used some pebbles from Dollar Tree to fill both of the tins up, and voila! Two new makeup brush holders!
It really was a fun and easy project! Excluding drying time the whole thing took about an hour. And now my bathroom will be a bit cuter!
Supply List:
- 2 tins
- Foam brush
- Acrylic paint
- Chalkboard labels (or supplies to make chalkboard labels)
- Mod-Podge Hi-Shine spray (or your favorite sealer)
- Pebbles
This is adorable. It is simple but functional.
Thank you! I thought it really dressed my dorm bathroom up while still sticking to a budget π
