DIY Kate Spade Glitter Coasters

I’ve mentioned in at least one previous blog post that I absolutely love Kate Spade, especially the home decor. But as a college student, sometimes the price tag isn’t always the most reasonable. Luckily, I’ve found ways to get the same look for a fraction of the cost on many of the items, and this is probably my favorite project to date!

I fell in love with Kate Spade’s glitter coasters awhile ago, but with a set of four selling for $35 on Amazon I wasn’t sure I wanted to dive in on the investment just yet. I spent some time searching Pinterest for ways to make similar coasters and from there, I created my own tutorial using the best of all the techniques I found! It cost under $10 to make a set of six.

Supplies:

  • Round cork coasters (I found mine at Hobby Lobby)
  • Chunky gold glitter (Hobby Lobby)
  • Gloss Mod Podge
  • Foam Brush
  • Gloss Mod Podge Sealer (it comes in a can and sprays out like spray paint/hairspray)

Steps:

  1. Coat the cork with a generous amount of Mod Podge and heavily sprinkle glitter over the whole thing. Let dry while repeating for the other 5 coasters.
  2. Gently shake off the excess glitter and apply another generous coat of Mod Podge. This will likely be pretty messy as some of the glitter from the first layer will likely come off and stick to your brush. I found that coating it in a dabbing motion helped a lot. Heavily sprinkle glitter over the coaster and repeat for the other 5 coasters.
  3. Let the coasters dry overnight and then gently shake the excess glitter off.
  4. Use the Mod Podge sealer to seal the glitter on and to prevent glitter from falling off. I did two coats, waiting 10-20 minutes in between coats.
  5. Let the coasters dry 24 hours before use, and enjoy!

I’m hoping to share more DIYs on my blog in 2016, so let me know if you like this type of post! It’s definitely different than my normal posts, but I love to craft and thought it would be fun to share how I make some of my projects. 🙂

xoxo
